The Swifts Foursomes is the longest running national schools golf event in the UK. Started in 1980 as the brainchild of Garnet Scott, a Housemaster at Malvern College, swifts golf has, and always will be, run on a non-profit basis by the schools for its students. It has been run as an independent schools’ foursomes knock out competition which takes place during the school year. Previously known as the HMC foursomes, the event went through a re-branding in 2024 to become the Swifts foursomes.
Schools compete as teams of 6 in 3 foursomes pairs in a scratch matchplay format. Initially a straight knockout tournament within several regions, in 2024 the format was altered. Now schools start within a group stage which consists of 4 - 6 schools. These groups compete in a round robin style matchplay series. The leading school within their group will play their neighbouring groups leader in a regional final knockout match. Once completed across all regions it determines the 8 schools to compete at the National Final for the ultimate prize.
The National Finals moves it location around some of the highest quality golf venues in the UK. The Finals itself consists of a similar format to initial the group stage. The 8 finalist schools are split into 2 groups of 4 and they compete a round robin style matchplay stages. The leading team from each group proceeds to a matchplay Final, while those who did not win complete a foursomes scratch stableford event.
Any schools is welcome to join the HMC Foursomes tournament. Should your school wish to enter a team, please follow the sign up event in the foursomes schedule above.
